Restorations to the Stations Of The Cross
from Saint Mary's Church in Stamford, Connecticut.
April, 2000 - Present
From a young boy I remember seeing the Stations Of The Cross. During mass I’d look at the details of each Station. After more than 70 years' time has taken its toll, there was extensive water damage, and several repaints. I noticed that a few attempts to restore them was not going in the right direction, so I volunteered to restore them. After examining all fourteen Stations I found that Station 13 was crumbling apart completely, Station 11 needed a base moulding and part of the left side was crumbling and missing its cross on the top. Station 9 and 10 both had crumbling base mouldings. My first thought was that I could remove one moulding from the base of one Station and make casts at my shop, later return to install the parts in the church. I was suspicious that there was a metal bar imbedded in the plaster around the circumference of the frame. I cut into the frame of Station 13 and found that there was a metal bar imbedded inside it and that the Stations would have to be removed to restore them. Below you'll see the progress of the restoration.
